It's deforming from the pipe cutter because it's thin, not because it's soft. I presume that it's thin for better heat transfer. Maybe swaging it isn't such a good idea; reaming it back out to some semblance of a circle might be a better idea. For future reference, is some other tool a better idea than a pipe cutter on these elements? The instructions that came with the element specifically said to use a pipe cutter, but even with the screw barely turned, it deformed the pipe rather than cutting it. Or is something simply wrong with my pipe cutter? It's a Ridgid 150 and the cutting wheel is brand new, but the tool itself is over 10 years old and has cut a lot of pipe.
