: The water doesn't come out anywhere near the drain. The water comes out under the counter near the faucet.
It sounds to me like you've got a crack or split, or maybe a casting flaw, in the body of the sink. The material under the overflow channel can be kind of thin.
: Normally there is no leakage. We have problems when our son runs the water full blast. After a period of time, we get a lot of water.
You probably have a slight blockage in the drain. When your son runs the water full blast, it back up the overflow channel and comes out the crack or hole or whatever up near the faucet.
I like hj's suggestion of inspecting the underside of the sink with a bright light. Only thing is, if you've gonna be running water while you do it, use a battery powered one ;-)
Best of luck.
