Many manufacturers discourage the external blanket. It is not really needed since the insulation keeps the exterior of the tank as cool as a blanket would. Most heat loss on a gas heater occurs up the center flue where the jacket is ineffective anyway. : we were told that our water heater did not need a blanket and actually would be damaged if it had one. It is a Reliance 501 for propane, installed in 1987. I can't find any information on the heater. Can you help?
