The correlation between the smell and the heat is suspicious...are you sure it's sewer gas and not a deceased mouse in a duct somewhere? Fixture traps filled with water are what keeps sewer gas out of the house. Pour a pitcher of water down that laundry floor drain (and any other fixtures that don't see water often) to make sure there's water in its trap.
