I phoned Maytag about just this question. They told me that the pump in our washer (a two-year-old model) is only designed to raise the water five feet.

In the apartment I have been renting for the past seven months, the poor washer pumps the water up at least ten feet. My wife and I have already had to replace the pump in the washer.
