IMMEDIATELY, turn off the circuit breaker. Then remove the electical cover on top of the water heater, and the one or two "doors" on the front of the water heater. Inspect all wires for burning. You could have aluminum wire feeding the water heater and it could be "melting".
: Twice now I have noticed what seems to be a hot wire smell coming from the hot water heater. It smells like it is electrical. It is a very strong odor. One of the pipes seems too hot to the touch, the other pipe remains cool. The emergency blowout pipe is warm also. This is a electric water heater.
