water coming out of washer drain when garbage disposal on

My kitchen sink drain is connected to the laundry room drain. There is a small sink in the laundry room, in addition to a PVC pipe outlet for the washing machine. Last night, I was using the washing machine and also washing some dishes in the kitchen sink. I noticed that there is about an inch of standing water in the laundry room sink. When I turned on the garbage disposal in the kitchen sink, nasty water shot out of the PVC pipe outlet. Why did this happen? How do I fix the problem? Thanks, Helen
