: Some areas require an air gap, so don't. Obviously, the dishwasher will drain fine without one, or all areas would require it. Loop the hose as high as possible under the counter, make sure it is not kinked and that it is secure. I am on my 3rd DW in 35 years and have never had an air gap. If your work is going to be inspected, then you must follow the letter of the code for your area.

I have never seen an air gap in 20+ years.
Although, if the poster had one, it was probably there because of a code requirement. It's not good advice to tell them they don't need it if we do not know if it is code to have one in their area.
