: We have a tub drain that was installed in about 1960 when the house was built. Recently it has stayed closed, and won't stay in the open (down) position. We can press the lever down to get the tub to drain, but we have to hold it in place to drain the tub.

Remove the overflow plate (two screw). Directly on the back of it, there should be a small pin holding a spring in position. That spring needs to be stretched slightly.
Since it is more than 40 years old, a complete replacement must be considered, the parts could be worn beyond repair.
