cast iron toilet flange---reusable or not?

I'm remodelling my bathroom and I've got cast iron drain pipes (probably original from 1907?!). Anyway, the toilet flange is intact, though rusted (but I treated it with a rust "arrestor", so it's solid now). The flange is not cracked or broken, and the bolts are even fine. But I noticed there apparently used to be a little lip built into the cast iron, toward the inner diameter, maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 inch high, and it is mostly gone in places. How important is that lip---the new replacement parts don't seem to have one? I'm hoping the wax ring will just squish down and take care of the unevenness of the cast iron surface and not cause a leak...

If this description is confusing and someone wants I could send a digital photo. THanks much!
