Thanks Hube, It is a jet pump. I opened a faucet and plugged the pump back in and it did run continually and the faucet ran for awhile in a steady stream which turned blackish (usually an indication that the water inside is partly frozen) but eventually the stream died down to a steady trickle and I pulled the plug on the pump again. I'm thinking that when it all thaws out, the pump will work again and at least I will find out if there is a leak. There is only a short length of pipe from the pump to the foundation (about 2 or 3 feet)and after that it is all underground till it gets to the well about 10 feet from the house. I don't think the pipe is much below the frostline where it enters the house. Now if only the weather wasn't suppose to stay in the teens for the next week.
