connecting plastic to chrome piping and chrome to chrome

Any suggestions on connecting my plastic drain pipe to a chrome trap? Should I count on the threads taking care of the matter or should I use sealant tape or plumber's putty? How about chrome to chrome? Should the threads take care of things? Much appreciated.
