Clanking in walls whenever heat comes on

Whenever the heat comes on in my townhouse, there is clanking and banging in the walls, generally above the boiler room located in the cellar. It sounds like something is hitting metal pipes with a metal object. The closer one is to the boiler room, the louder the noise. Once the boiler is "off", the noise stops.

It is gas hot water heating system, with baseboards in each room.

I'm a new homeowner, and can't believe this happens in every home. Any thoughts on why this occurs.
