There should be no waste in the pipes, that's why they are sloped. You might get some odor from the sewer, but you can stuff some rags in the open pipe to stop most of that. The worst part of working with cast iron is the weight. You'll probably want to cut it into fairly short lengths so you can carry it out. Make the transition for cast to PVC or ABS with a hubless connector, but check you local codes.
