Hot water outlet nipple on water heater

I noticed a leak on top of water heater. Replaced the CPVC 3/4" connector 4 times now, varying degrees of tightness, teflon tape, thread putty. Still have the leak as soon as all faucets are closed and pressure starts to build. Not a squirting type leak, but just a puddle rising from the bottom of the connector on top of the water heater. ? It is a Lowe's model at least 4 years old. 50 gal electric. Is there a leak somewhere under the top cover of the water heater? Should I just invest in a new hot water heater?
