Believe it or not, the National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54) seems to include a specific prohibition against this, so someone must have tried it before: 3.3.5. Prohibited Locations. Gas piping inside any building shall not be installed in or through a circulating air duct, clothes chute, chimney or gas vent, ventilating duct, dumbwaiter, or elevator shaft. This provision shall not apply to ducts used to provide combustion and ventiliation air in accordance with Section 5.3 or to above-ceiling spaces are covered in 3.3.4. CEA
