Shower Valve Location

I replaced a leaking cultured marble stand-up shower with a 3 piece remodeler from Aqua-Glass. I want to use the existing Moen single divertor valve but the stem is not long enough to install the handle, fittings etc. Is there anyway I can extend the valve by about 1" so I can install shower handle and trim ring properly?? If not, do different fixtures have different lengths of valve stems??? Thansk???
