They are essentially minicheck valves that prevent the hot water in the tank from gravitating into the rest of the piping system until a faucet is opened. This minimizes heat loss and the subsequent operation of the water heater, although any savings are minimal. : What are heat trap nipples in relation to water heaters? What is the material? How do they make them more energy efficient?
