Companies similiar to Roto-Rooter often will have the equipment to send a wire into the drain and then using a sensor, "kind of" like an industrial strength stud sensor can "trace" the route of the drain and they can use chalk to indicate the path. It is not cheap, but it may not be expensive either, compared to making a major league mistake like hitting(missing) the drain in the wrong place.
