I go a step further and assume the plumbing is copper and copper doesn't rust. If the tank is almost 30 years old, the bottom is probably ready to drop out of it and that would be no fun at all!
: Glass lined water heaters do not produce rust. Steel piping does. If you do not have steel piping I would look at your water treatment unit.
