: Our old pipes were all copper. In our new bath, the plumbers put all PVC pipes. They are louder than our old pipes. Now I read in a book that to reduce noise you can put cast iron pipes in the walls and pvc for the rest of the waste water. I'm wondering if this does make things quieter, and why our plumber and general contractor never suggested this. I told them many times I didn't want a lot of pipe noise.

Reply:
Cast iron piping is quieter because it is much more dense than PVC or copper, it also costs more to install.
The PVC could have been insulated to help silence the water moving through it. If you told them up front that you were concerned about excessive noise, someone goofed and should rectify it.
Good Luck. e-plumber
