: My question is how does one install the compression drain? Does one simply just "drop" it in the hole in the pan and it fits into the main drain pipe. Is it secured in anyway to this pipe, i.e. like pvc cement?

These compression shower drain fittings are all designed to fit specific shower pans by their manufacturers. The manufacturer specifies a specific type of pipe (usually 2" plastic or no-hub CI) and provides a rubber gasket to seal the space between the drain stub pipe and the opening in the pan. The usual way to install these gaskets is to lube them with a bit of plumber's grease and press-fit them over the drain stub pipe. You need to make sure that your pan sits properly over the drain stub.
