What brand of toilet do you have? What does the inside of the tank look like?
Most cases of bad smell are from the gasket between the bowl and the waste flange at the floor.
When I replace toilets, I like to clean the floor underneath the toilet.
You don't really hear about sewer gas being dangerous, more annoying really.

: I live in an apartment. There has been a bad smell cooming from my toilet for several months. I have been told there is most likely a malfunction in the trap, letting in sewer gases. The manager found the gasket to be loose and something else wrong that prompted him to replace the toilet. But the smell stayed. The plumber they hired has no guesses. I have told them repeatedly my theory, but no good response. The smell is killing me, filling up my bedroom constantly. Does anyone have any solid ideas I could share with the manager?? Thank you!! PS - Are the sewer gases dangerous?
