Kitchen floor underlayment

My wife and I were going to put ceramic tile in the kitchen. I started ripping up the floor which had existing vinyl tiles from the 50's on one side and sheeted linoleum on the other side. I got the linoleum up with ease. I am having real difficulty taking up the vinyl tiles (is asbestos a big issue?). I have tried heat guns and sharp edged tools. What is the best way to make my floor ready for adding a different type of flooring? I have heard of embossing levelers, luan, take up the existing flooring, etc. Please help....
