When I looked at one last week in a good plumbing supply store the flapper and the float were a long ways from each other. Same style toilet in two different locations. I am puzzled by this and also what is the fix for this problem?

I'm not exactly sure which type toilet that you purchased but try to move the float ball away from the path in which the flapper drops. There might just be a fraction of an inch in between when you're finished. You may even need to twist the fill valve slightly if there isn't a brass rod attached to the float ball.
