It strictly depends on what kind of material it is. If it is a lot of rocks then you do not want to put that directly on the pipe. If it is fine sand or gravel then you can use it to fill the trench.

: I finished moving my PVC drain pipes within a 4' x 1' trench cut out of the concrete slab in my basement. Got the city inspector to come out and give me the green light that all is up to code and ready to backfill.

: I've not worked with a concrete pad before and would like some insight if anyone is willing to share. Do I throw back in the dirt I took out, put a layer of plastic across it, add an inch or so of gravel an pour and level 4" of concrete. Is it necessary to use sand to cover the pipes? Any other items I should look out for as I fill it in?
