According to this document on the EPA site:

The wastewater from a (properly-recharging) softener should be the calcium and magnesium that were removed from the water, which can be good for plants.

The treated water in your house has the sodium/potassium in it that was bumped out by the captured magnesium/calcium. The desired water is actually bad for plants!

: : If it contains that much salt, then I assume it wouldn't be good to send it to the septic tank and leaching bed either?
