I became tired of listening to the gurgling of the dishwasher pumping water through the air gap. I decided that if the dishwasher inlet to the garbage disposer ever glogged, I would certainly know that as soon as I opened the dishwasher as it would be full of water. Thus, I bypassed the air gap and attached the outlet line directly to the garbage disposer. Never had a problem with clogged line and I lived quietly ever after.
