Pipe sizes and fittings

I'm looking to replace my pool cleaner. The new one I want to buy has a 1 1/2" male fitting that is supposed to screw into a threaded pvc pipe sticking out of the pool wall. The old one has a similar fitting and the specifications indicate it to be 1 1/2" also. However, when I removed the piece and measured it, it measures 1 3/4"??!!?? I'm confused. Is this one of those 2 by 4 things where it really only measures 1 1/2 by 4 but they call it a 2by4?
