It sounds to me like your washer drain does not have a P-trap. This is that U shaped fitting like under your sink. Traps stay full of water and prevent sewer odor and gas from getting into the house. It doesn't have to go under the floor, just close to the floor. If you have plastic pipe, it's very easy to install and you could do it yourself with a little advice from the hardware store. Metal pipe is a bit more work, but would not take too long for a plumber to do. Material costs are minor.
