Pipe banging

Since I received no response to my last question, I'll try to rephrase it and maybe someone will be able to provide an answer. What would cause the pipe that leads from my hot water heater to shake violently and bang against the rafters above it? This only happened once - when a shower, washing machine and bathroom faucets were all being used simultaneously. Is there something that needs to be fixed, or was this a fluke? Thanks for any assistance.
