Is the heating system steam or hot water? I would expect it to be steam if you are hearing knocking sounds. In a steam system you can get water hammer as slugs of condensate flow around inside the piping system. A hot water heating system, which normally has a circulating pump and supply and return piping, should not have much noise except possibly some small noise from pipe movement due to thermal expansion. Improving the condensate drainage system returning condensate back to the boiler will reduce knocking in a steam system.
