Pop Up Style Tub Drain Removal

I recently moved into a house with pop up style tub drains. One push to close drain, another to open drain. One tub drains very slowly and I want to clean out. I tried from below but the drain goes into PVC and it would not be easy to access. I can unscred the drain cover and remove a rubber gasket but there is a piece in the center of the drain which goes up and down that I need to get out to snake the drain. Can this piece be removed or can anyone offer me advice on clearing out the drain. I think it is hair since the sink drains were full of hair as well. Thanks.....Jim
