If it burns out near the terminal that goes to the thermostat, the water will provide the "neutral" path and the element will keep working, but it will bypass the thermostat and heat until the reset button on the top thermostat pops out. Happens quite frequently. : : You didn't check for why the old valve was leaking. You probably have a burned out element that is making the sound and overheating the water. : : : Melanie : HJ: how can a "burnt out" element overheat the water. seems like a burnt out element would not do anything!
