water dilemma

Can someone tell me how many gallons of water an average house hold uses in a day? I own a piece of property that I had intended to retire on but now I've found out the my likely hood of having a productive well is slim to none. Someone suggested that I might look into a cistren (?) system. I was wondering how big a tank I'd need or if it would even be practicle. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks
