Water Softener Leak - Threaded Plastic to Brass Connection

I am installing a WaterBoss 900 water softener. I have all the pipes ready to go except for one leak. The "out" connection from the softener leaks. The softener has plastic male threads and I'm attempting to attach a female brass fitting. I've tried plumbers tape and pipe joint compound and neither seems to work. I think I have damaged the plastic threads a little. What is a sure fire way to connect a plastic to brass threaded connection without a leak? Keep in mind the plastic threads are worn a bit.
