lennox complete heat boiler

I have a lennox complete heat boiler with heat exchanger loop for in floor heating, and continuous potable HW loop after going through a sparco mixing valve. It is essentially a semiclosed system releived of pressure when hot water is drawn off for domestic use. Lennox shows "heat traps" in their manual--those male-male nipples and suggests that they should be at inlet and outlet of the boiler and also suggest an expansion tank on the cold Water supply side to allow for expansion of HW in the boiler. If so will not the "Heat trap" act as a back flow preventer-check valve thus making the expansion tank redundant?thanks
