The house was built in the 50s which is a strong indication that you may have galvanized piping instead of copper for your water supply.
Over time, the galvy pipes corrode from inside. When the water sits in the pipes for a while, that rust mixes with it, thus you have rust-colored water when you first open the faucet. YOu need a copper repipe.
If you don't have galvanized piping (which I strongly doubt), then it's time to replace the water heater...
