Precautions you need to take will depend on how the house is plumbed. If you have full access to the pipes via a basement or crawl space, there's not too much problem. If the pipes are enclosed in walls then you have carpentery problems cutting into walls and patching them. If the plumbing is really old, you're probably dealing with galvanized pipe that has corroded mostly shut and will need to be replaced, and don't just replace part of them, you'll end up doing the rest anyway. If you are sweating copper, be very careful of fire. Mostly it's common sense. If the water main you refer to is the pipe from the water meter to the house, the most common problem is old age. The cure is to replace it, not try to patch it.
