: I have a historic home (1838) and am remodeling an bigupstairs bathroom. I need to get drain and waterlines through app. 8-9 floor joists. Is there a rule of thumb to the size and area located on the joist these holes should be? I have a clawfoot tub in this room as well and do not want to sacrifice floor integrity.

A hole can be 1/3 of the joist, and the upper and lower 2" must remain intact.
If needed, the pipes can be dropped below the joist and a soffit built around them. In some homes, they run soffits around the entire room, hiding key building components inside.
