: A sewage smell is coming from the area of my sump pump. What does that mean and who would I contact to get it fixed?
I recently had the same problem. Thinking that it may be just stagnant water in the sump basin, I pressed the lever on the pump to clear out as much water as possible. A couple of days later the smell was much stronger than before. I looked in the basin again and discovered the water was black. As it turned out, I had a cracked sewer pipe. Fortunately, the crack was about 2 feet from the exterior wall. They chopped up a small hole in the floor and repaired the pipe. It only cost about $600. I was told that if it were on the exterior side of the wall, the cost to repair would have been several thousand dollars. Try clearing out the water first and take it from there. Good luck.
