It is not doing any "damage" now. If you leave it in, it will just continue making the noise. Depending on the make and model, you may be able to unscrew the top and repair it using a maintenance kit for that valve.

: I have located the source of the "whinning noise" in my plumbing - THANKS TO THIS WEBSITE!!!! I have a few more questions. I had this pressure reducer valve replaced approx. 5 yrs. ago, is it normal to have a problem this quickly? What will happen if I just leave it like this, will it do any further damage? Lastly, what is a reasonable amount of money to replace this? Thank you again for all you help!
