Recirc Hot Water installation

About to put in a recirculating hot water pump. The house already has a return line plumbed to the water heater. I am using a Laing pump which recommends an air vent on one side of the pump and a hose bib on the other (in addition to a 'Y' bib off the water heater drain. Is the air vent necessary? Couldn't the hose bib on one side of the pump and the 'Y' bib on the other act as air vents? Also, the current drain on the water heater is plastic. I was planning on replacing this with brass since it would now have constant hot water flowing. Is that necessary as well?

Thanks for any assistance
