I'f you can cause an explosion using your torch near sewer gasses, you must have a leak on your torch. LOL. The way I remove a lead okum joint is to drill the largest hole possible in the joint. Then I use an 18" narrow chisel to pry out the lead. Insert a ty-seal into the bell and force the PVC/ABS pipe into the seal (pounding the pipe in won't work, use direct pressure via some leverage.)
By the way, fernco fittings (all rubber with two pipe clamps) are not legal within the building. It must be a mission or no hub style clamp (fernco does make a mission style band)
