Gerber Ultra Flush handle falls off

Hi - a couple of years ago, based upon reviews on this site, I bought a Gerber Ultraflush toilet.
It's been working fine, with the exception of a couple of problems.

1. The handle doesn't 'snap' down all the time & it makes a funny sound. I found a reference
to it on this message board (they used the word 'Rumpff' - I couldn't have said it better myself -
LOL).

2. I haven't tried the solution as mentioned in the above post yet, but the second problem
if as follows: for the last couple of weeks, after I flush, the handle falls off! It doesn't screw on,
so my husband holds the connecting rod inside while I hit the handle with a rubber hammer.

In hindsight, I wish I had gotten the model with the pushbutton on the top. I'm not sure which model
number I have, but it's the elongated bowl with a metal handle on the left.

How can this be fixed or could I get it converted to the pushbutton type?
