Pipe joint compound or teflon tape does more than seal the joints. It make removal somewhat easier in the future. I prefer teflon tape. I wrap 3 or 4 wraps in the same direction as the threads when tightening. That way they won't unwrap as you turn the pipe. Paste type compound works well too, I just prefer tape. I'd guess that you're not using enough if there's a leak.
