A washing machine can not be plumbed solidly to a drain. The are designed to pump out through a hose that has a J shaped end that just hangs in the pipe. This pipe has to be above the level of the water in the washer. You're correct about the 2", 1-1/2" won't handle the water fast enough. There needs to be a pee trap before the drain joins the sewer line. That's just like under the kitchen and bathroom sinks. All fixtures' drains have to have them to prevent sewer gas from come into the house. The toilet has a trap built in, all other fixures have a separate trap.

If you/your husband don't feel comfortable with doing this yourself, then you need a plumber.
