My suggestion is to install an insert. Problem with open fireplaces, wood or gas, is that if they are open to the room, more warm air is exhausted up the flue than is supplied by the fire. They are not impossible to install yourself if you have some basic carpentry and plumbing abilities. The vent is a flexible metal pipe that goes up the flue and is capped on top. It will adapt to fit a masonary chimney. The gas supply is standard gas plumbing, I used 3/4" black iron, the unit itself has to be sealed around the outside of the existing fireplace, and that's about it unless you go for remote switching, then you have to do a little basic wiring. As far as brands are concerned, there are several and as long as they are certified, there should be no problem.
