clogged vent stack

Our house was built in the 40s. We replaced almost all the DWV piping, but now have a slow kitchen sink. Up on the roof, I've noticed the old vent is full of muck, leaves, and seems solid. How do I clear the vent, which I think would resolve the slow kitchen drain it's connected to. The vent must run up and across then up to the roof. I can see the expansion pipe from in the attic going through the roof. Can I clear the clog myself without abandoning the vent line and hiring a plumber to tear out my walls to install a new vent? I'm on septic and don't want to use too many chemicals. Do they make giant augers?? Please advise!
