Depending on how your piping system is arranged you may not need one, but it is unlikely that it was installed just to look pretty. If the old heater needed an expansion tank then the new one will also. You an use the old one as long as the diaphragm has not ruptured.

: MY GAS HOT WATER HEATER HAS AN EXPANSION TANK.IF I REPLACE MY WATER HEATER CAN I ELIMINATE THE EXPANSION TANK? IF NOT CAN I REUSE THE OLD ONE AND DOES IT HAVE TO BE PUMPED UP WITH AIR. I HAVE NEVER HAD AN EXPANSION TANK IN ANY OF MY PREVIOUS HOMES ,WHY DO I NEED ONE NOW?
